A better place for general questions related to GIS might be
GISlist. You can post there by sending an email to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Info on GISlist (including how to subscribe,
etc.) is at http://spatialnews.geocomm.com/community/lists/ (scroll
down for the list you're interested in.)
As to prices, most of these companies provide several products. You
need to be more specific if you want to have a better chance getting
answers. Also all prices are negotiable. If you want to buy 10,000
copies of any of them near the end of a fiscal quarter, you'll get a
tremendous deal. Prices are not published anywhere partly because of
this flexibility, but mostly because resellers don't want you to
focus on price first, and by not posting such a juicy piece of info,
we get to talk to you directly. Generally that's a good thing,
because a reseller can listen to your needs and maybe point out
features you might have missed.
However, it's ridiculous to treat this info as "classified." Reading
Fred Limp's review of ArcView 8.1 in this month's GEO World
(http://www.geoplace.com) I was very surprised that ESRI wouldn't
reveal the price in a public software review! I wonder why they are
so afraid of revealing that bit of info?
Anyway, the suggested retail price for MapInfo Professional 6.5 in
North America is $1495.
