MapCalc Professional 2.0 was released on October 31st of this year. MapCalc
Learner 1.0 has been available for about a year.

MapCalc Learner 2.0, aimed at students and anyone interested in spatial
analysis, may be evaluated for two weeks by downloading from:

http://www.redhensystems.com/mapcalc

The legacy of MapCalc stems from the earliest days of computerized spatial
analysis initiated at Yale (or was that Harvard) University. Its routines
were first outlined in boxes of punch cards that evolved to eight inch
floppies and then into a DOS product known as pMAP. Red Hen Systems is both
proud and humbled in that MapCalc can trace its legacy to character based
maps!

In its current form it represents some 30+ spatial components that are now
ActiveX COM objects. MapCalc is well integrated to both MapInfo
Professional 6.x and Surfer 7.0. It can read and write MapInfo TAB and MIG
as well as SHP and ESRI ASCII grids.

There are two forms of the current release: Learner (limited to 100x100 grid
cells, WGS84 projection only, and no geoTIF import) and Professional
(essentially unlimited cell matrices - reasonable efficient on Pentium 400
machine at say 400,000 cells -, includes a MapX engine for projection
transformations and image registration).

To understand many of the important aspects of raster/grid spatial analysis
you should visit Dr Berry's WEB site at:

http://corp.pacificmeridian.com/basis2/MapAnalysis/Default.html

GeoWorld also reviewed the Learner and Academic version of MapCalc 1.0 which
you can read at: http://www.geoplace.com/gw/2001/0601/0601qt.asp

MapCalc is a current revision of legacy code that spans more than two
decades of spatial thinking from its earliest days at Harvard and Yale;
MapCalc's legacy predates GRASS as far as I know. It has most if not all of
the spatial analysis tools found in ESRI's Spatial Analyst. Its fathers are
Dr. J. Berry and Dr. K. Reed who as PhDs at Yale helped sort out modern day
spatial analysis....

MapCalc Learner Trialware - free as a download from Red Hen Systems
MapCalc Learner - $22.95 for CDROM including extensive tutorial and case
studies
MapCalc Professional - $495

MapCalc relies on MapInfo Professional for the cartographic presentation of
its abstracted spatial relationships as well as re-integration with vector
layering.

Subject: MI-L MapCalc vs. Vertical Mapper

Does anyone have experience with both MapCalc and Vertical Mapper.
Are the two products competitors or not. Whats the difference or similarity
between the two products?

Thanks,
Jakob Lanstorp, GIS-Developer
