Have just set up business in Byron Bay area, Australia, and already looking at getting
involved in a couple of the local planning
issues (state highways wanting to go through nature reserves etc). To do this I
naturally want to get hold of some base data such
as cadastral, air photos, soils, veg and topographic data. I would appreciate if
anyone has some advice on the best way to go
about this process.

After working the the spatial industry in Queensland for 12 years, often in regional
planning studies, I find it quite strange how
useless the accumlated knowledge and contacts is by moving 30km over the border.
Searches on the ANZLIC database suggest
the Department of Information Technology and Management (LPI) as the place to go for
cadastral and topographic info? Are there
alternatives?

My past dealings with the NSW data providers suggested that the NSW policies were even
more draconian than Queensland had
at the time, but perhaps the situation has become more enlightened in recent times as
it has in the north. A comment from a client
about what is being charged for cadastral data suggests not. Is there as much
frustration about getting reasonable access to state
held data down here as there was in Queensland a few years ago?

I would also be particularly interested in traps when purchasing data. For example,
you can buy topographical data in Queensland
in AS2482 format for less than 1/2 the price of any other format.

Thanks for any input
