It's quite amazing the performance you can get simply by making rectangular spatial queries using the "between" predicate in where clauses. In terms of a true spatial add-on for MySql, I have no heard of one and even if one were available, I cannot see any way it could interface correctly with Pro. MapInfo recently announced SpatialWare for MS SQL Server and this looks like a great product for those who don't want to go all the way to Oracle Spatial.
