Hi

You are rigth, but one problems is, that the commercial Javaclients is=20
large and clumsy (ArcIms's is approx 10000 lines of code and MapXstreame=20
is also very large) and you had to add the vector data to the download=20
amount. The result is a significant loadtime and a slow response.

Our conclusion has been, that we had to develop our own Javaclient and=20
serverside handling. It has been less complicated than anticipated, but=20
you need a good java programmer with geographic skills. The client is=20
resonable small and only loads the object which is edited (in our case,=20
the end user only add's a polygon where he wants a permit, but we are=20
working on another solution where the user can select exsisting objects=20
for editing).

If you want multiuser access, then spatialdatabases is the way, but they=20
are complex and with minimal documentation. We have aquired Spatialware=20
but are novices and has to spend some time to getting to know the right=20
way of doing things (it looks linke, stored procedures and transfer of=20
small parts of the dataset is the solution, if you want a decent=20
performance)=20

Steve,

I believe there are 2 main issues with web map editing:

1. The sophistication of user interface: Apart from basic operations, I
guess would need to be a Java app to permit reasonable vector operations=20
in
the user browser. Dont have much experience with Java so cant comment on=20
the
ease of update following a user operation. Click and repaint in NT version
of Mapxtreme is possible, but a slow process. (Maybe some tricks with
multiple browsers/frames and reflecting an edit in a tiny, fast, zoomed-in
view?).

2. Multi-user map editing: MapX (or mapxtreme) does not provide this. I
have implemented intranet solutions in MapX/Mapbasic which provided
multi-user editing using transaction tables, lock tokens ( a file opened
exclusively or a lock applied to a "real" database table/record) and
pending update (waiting for a token to become available before updating=20
the
master MapInfo TAB file). Also requires the target objects to be uniquely
identified (primary key such as a customer id, feature id is the easiest
method, but spatial key is possible (MBR)), so that transaction file
contents wont overlap. Also, if you have maps in TAB files and attribute
data in a database, edit a region, say, which affects both, the database
update also needs to be held until the map update is performed.

I havent seen much dialogue on this subject on the list, but it is a
long-term issue for MapInfo and MapX. MapInfo would suggest these days to
put your map data into a database. The last time I looked at Oracle=20
spatial
cartridge for eg., "long-term" locks or locks based on a spatial region
weren't really possible, so you still need to record some sort of=20
artificial
lock implemented by the application. This may have changed or I may be=20
wrong
in this assumption? Spatial edit operations usually take a relatively long
time compared to non-spatial data. The advantage of the approach in point=20
2,
is that in theory someone could be editing a region for a week and the
update would still work. (If a user logs-off and logs-in, they would
reconnect to their transaction table and the next edit click would update
this table).

I think web map editing is achievable with a reasonable amount of work by
the app in managing the extract and locks and verifying the update.

Phil.
