One simplistic option would be to open the tab files in a text editor and
look at the table structures there. They'll be in the first section of the
document. It covers the info you're looking for.
The top of the City_125 layer that comes with MI Pro looks like this for
instance:
Type NATIVE Charset "WindowsLatin1"
Fields 4
City Char (40) Index 1 ;
State Char (2) Index 2 ;
Tot_hu Decimal (9, 0) ;
Tot_pop Decimal (9, 0) ;
Not technical, but works!
