Dear Readers,

We have just recently and with the help of this list made big strides in the
digitization of our client's paper maps. Having done so we now have rather
messy grids of polylines. We need to now convert the blank areas between
the grid lines into regions. The current plan is to do this manually. Is
there an automatic way to do so? Or any set of steps that is more automatic
than manual tracing.

As I mentioned, the grid is relatively messy. For instance in some cases
the polylines do cross the edges of multiple possible regions and in others
the polylines just make up the edge of the single block. This varies. This
grid is also not entirely regular (i.e. not made of perfect rectangles).
This grid includes edges of given blocks and the entire side of the grid
sometimes forming curves and regions forming oddly shaped trapezoids and
simple triangles. Right now we do not reliably have nodes at intersections,
but this is simple enough for us to do if something can speed the rest of
the grid to region process. We can also remove extra nodes along the
Polyline if the lines need to be cleaner.

Note, we've tried converting polylines to regions but to no avail due to the
polylines sometimes crossing multiple regions and at other times staying
within a single grid's side.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Even a better way to work the Polyline to
region tool could be helpful.

As always, thanks in advance and have a great holiday season!
