Thanks to all who responded to my grid to region conversion need (Derek
Snyder of MapInfo, Uffe Kousgaard of RouteWare and Roy Chiappini of Randa
Enterprises). As always the solutions were greatly appreciated. The one we
settled on was actually right under my nose which made it wonderfully
convenient. Thanks to Derek for the suggestion. If anyone is interested, a
quick and relatively painless way to convert a grid of polylines was to use
the Objects>Enclose feature on the main menu of MapInfo Professional.

The steps for this were...
1. Clean the table of polylines, making sure that every corner of all
planned regions have overlapping nodes (these overlapping nodes are how it
knows which parts of the polylines to use for the edges of the regions).
2. Select the polylines to use for the enclosure.
3. Have an editable layer open (i.e. the cosmetic layer, a new layer or the
original table of polylines). Note, this creates new regions, but doesn't
alter the existing lines so doing this in the original layer will result in
a layer with both polylines and polygons in the same place in the layer.
4. Select Objects>Enclose from the top menu bar.

5. Poof! you have a layer of regions filling the spaces that had been within
the grid. These regions are adjoining and continue to share any overlapping
nodes.

The main issue I ran into with this was the need for overlapping nodes--we
had a few nodes that from any distance appeared to touch, but in reality
were barely not overlapping. Creating a new layer for the new regions, then
overlaying this with the old Polyline map shown in a different color pointed
these errors out nicely. The key is that each intersection must have an
overlapping node or the area won't be used as a corner. That said, if an
area is unwanted for a corner (i.e. the region needs to be larger), the lack
of an overlapping node there could be useful. Hope this helps somebody else
too!

Have a good new year!
