Hi everyone,

This message is going to be mainly related to MapPoint (although some to
MapXtreme), but you all are sharp GIS developers, so I figured that you
could help.

We are trying to put a mapping app online. I am mainly a Java developer and
very new to GIS (as well as Microsoft), so you're going to have to help me
here. One simple task that we need the app to do is:
in the browser, the user gives a lat/long, and they are given a map with the
lat/long as the center of the map. Now, to my understanding, the following
technologies could do this:
--MapXtreme
--ArcIMS
--Autodesk MapGuide
--MapServer
But, for reasons I won't go into, my company has decided to not use any of
those technologies. What is the situation with Microsoft MapPoint? To my
understanding, it's not a "internet mapping engine" as the others are? I
see that MapPoint comes with an ActiveX control where you can embed much of
MapPoint's functionality into your VB apps. Now, remembering that I am
fairly new to Microsoft technologies, would you be able to use this ActiveX
control to act as a mapping server to accomplish the above task in a
browser?

I'm assuming that the biggest issue is licensing. I see that Microsoft
stipulates that anyone who uses a VB app that includes that MapPoint control
must have a run-time version and license. Would those have to be named
licensed users? Would it be necessary to have our internet users download
this MapPoint run-time installation while we individually pay for each
run-time license as they are used?

There are so many knowledgeable GIS people on this list; I hope you can
help me. TIA and I'll sum.

Steve
