Paul, Other than buying it from the OS the only other option is to use DCW data. It is nothing fancy, just main motorways and A roads and you'll have to convert it from ArcInfo E00 format to MapInfo tab files. Follow the link http://www.maproom.psu.edu/dcw/ . It's similar to the 'free' data that comes with the UK version of MapInfo.
