Hello Everyone Here is an overview of the responses I received to my question.
Thank you all so much!! Sarah QUESTION: I am moving a few of the tab files used in approximately 100 workspaces that reference these files... As you know, each workspace is set up to reference the tab file in one location. Is there a quick and easy way to change the location in each of these workspaces, as opposed to opening each one individually and repointing? I have tried copying the new path into the workspace using Notepad, but there still seem to be problems... RESPONSES: 1. CopyPlus from www.spatialplus.com 2. Search Plus available from www.spatialplus.com . Its free and allows you to change multiple workspaces in one go. Its basically a recursive search and replace tool which works for any text file. Once all your files have been shifted or files and drives have been renamed, you can basically search find and replace all the paths (and names) with the new ones... It can be bothersome, but it does sort out all of your workspaces at once. Another tool we used, to find the troublemaking paths, is WorkspaceControl, from 4th beach Software Pty, again, a free download trial package. 3. Link Plus from a company called SpatialPlus www.spatialplus.com 4. Move the files as necessary, noting the new location for each move. Then edit the workspace in Notepad. Using "search and replace", amend the location only (omitting the filename). This method is still time consuming, but much easier and more accurate than any other method that I have tried. 5. One way is to alter the PReferences setting. Under preferences->directories is the opportunity to add 'search directories' (a whole load of them!) which are used for finding TABs. The workspace is read, the TAB is not found, and then it goes through the directories listed in Preferences to find them - and only after that stage does it fail if it still cant find your TABs. You can just point it to a whole directory/drive if you so wish. Note that it does not write to your workspace file! it doesn't update them. However, i am sure someone will reply to you who has a utility to do this....i think ones called Workspace Manager. Options > Preferences > Directories > (bottom half: Search directories for tables) > Add > and add the drive or folder that the files are located in. This way, MI should look for the files in the location you just selected so the workspaces should still open with the correct files. Problem can arise if you have more than 1 file with the same name! 6. There is a tool called Grep32 which is freeware and does a file-based search and replace based on a text string. I have used it before and downloaded it from www.shareware.com You execute it at command line giving a directory folder name, search string and replace string and it goes through the entire folder looking for that string and updating it. ********************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed.
