Dear Listers,

many thanks for all your comments. My original question is below, and the
replies in full below that, but in summary...

There are a few people using MapInfo with Citrix, and the general feeling
seems to be it 'may' work in a Terminal Server Environment. However, the
official word is that this is an unsupported environment and technical
support is not available for customers choosing this environment.

I guess we have to decide whether we are willing to risk 'going it alone'.

Cheers
Karen

Dear listers, I am greatly in need of some technical advise...

We currently have MapInfo loaded on a server, with the client part installed
on designated PCs. Although the software and data are on the server, it is
the PC that does the processing. ProViewer is currently installed on
individual PCs, accessing the same data as MapInfo over the network.

It has been suggested that as an organisation we move to a "Terminal Server
Environment" and may use Citrix. I know next-to-nothing about networks, but
as I understand it this is where the PC acts as an interface, and logs the
user into a processor server which does the processing, and so only sends a
small amount of information (key strokes, visual display information etc.)
between the user and server across the network.

Has anyone had any experience of using MapInfo & ProViewer in such a way? Or
does anyone know if it is possible, and if so how it might affect their
stability, operation and performance.

Will SUM

Many thanks
Karen

Hello Karen,

I saw this posting on the MapInfo-L and thought you should be aware of the
officially supported operating systems, see this URL:

http://dynamo.mapinfo.com/products/Specifications.cfm?ProductID=44

       Operating System Requirements

Runs in Microsoft Windows 2000, 98, 95 and Windows NT 4.0 Version 6.5
logo certified for MS Windows 2000 Version 6.0 logo certified for MS
    Windows NT 4.0, 98, and 95

As you can see, MapInfo Professional does not support Linux, Windows
emulators, Xwindows, Windows Terminal Server or Citrix Metaframe.

I have heard of people using Windows Terminal Server / Citrix Metaframe to
run MapInfo Professional, however it is an unsupported environment and
technical support is not available for customers choosing this environment.

Karen,

We are an existing Citrix site, and are planning on running some MapInfo
seats this way. I checked with MapInfo UK and was told that MapInfo Pro is
compatible with Citrix. I don't know about ProViewer. I hope this helps.

We've got a copy of MapInfo running across Citrix, but this is largely used
for quick training purposes - Citrix allows you to 'shadow' a user and take
control of what they are doing, which is pretty good for demonstrating how
to do something when they are a few hundred miles away (we have home workers
connected by ISDN lines).
What we are also building is a MapX product that allows these users access
to a customised interface. This certainly works within the Citrix
environment although the biggest drawback for us is the speed of the ISDN
connection. The server we use for Citrix is not as stable as perhaps a
'normal' server just issuing files seems to be, but I'm not sure whether
that is more to do with the server or the Citrix software.
We are only in Grantham so if you want to come across to have a look at
Citrix and MapInfo/MapX just let me know.

Cheers, Ian White.

Hi Karen and List,

ProViewer DOES work with Citrix (we have a customer doing just that).

Karen,

Please do summarize if anyone responds to you.

I've asked MapInfo about this and have been told by them that they
technically don't support this because they have not worked with this and
have not tested it.

Off the record though my support person did mention that this might work (or
might not). We here felt that logically it should, but as they don't support
it, they won't make a statement of yes or no.

That all said, we had a client that spoke about doing this and didn't have a
solid answer. If you learn anything, please let me or the list know.

Thanks in advance!
