Much experimenting has produced the following discoveries:

The Raster image I was using was a .tif file with a black background. The
table was registered with the black background selected as the transparent
color. Editing the .tif in a graphics editor and changing the black color
to white then, deselecting the transparent option, caused the raster to
print properly in the background.

As far as the inability to print a custom large size plot, it appears that
the printer preferences ( Options>Preferences>Printers) appears to be
conflicting with the Page Setup of the layout (where a custom large size was
specified). The result would be that Mapinfo spooled out a relatively small
file which produced no plot at the plotter (as if it was never sent.) I was
however, able to be produce the same large 68" x 110" plot when I
reinstalled MI 5.0 which worked perfectly.

Has anyone had similar problems with MI 6.0 or beyond? Just trying to
determine if these are system problems or MI bugs.
