Thanks, I must have confused not being able to edit non-native tables to
include not being able to create maps.... well now I know, isn't this list
useful!

You are wrong. All tables can be made mappable like this in mapbasic:

create map <tablename> coordysys <clause>

This works for Excel, text etc. I guess this is also what Khurram was
told in private e-mail.
But you can't add new fields, pack table etc on non-native (or DBF)
files.
