Well to help clarify it even more. I was only asking this question purely
on the basis of how Windows NT and MapInfo work together. I was just making
sure that there were no implications of setting the users privileges on the
workstation with MapInfo on to say a Power User or Guest and they would
still be able to use MapInfo with virtually no problems (except the ones we
encounter for other reasons - another debate???).

I am not worried about users licenses since we have a corporate account with
MapInfo with over 500 users. And that is someone else's job to look after!

I do believe now I have gained enough insight from the various answers on
here to say that there would be no problems with my original question!

Cheers!

Darrin,

It is common for organisations to have multiple user accounts on a single PC
for a variety of reasons. Whether a user has administritive rights on that
PC is thoroughly academic in terms of his right to use the software. I work
on systems where we have multiple accounts on each pc, one for people like
me as a support person to use which has administrative priveleges and one
for the users to use which has limited priveleges. So although there are
multiple users there is still only one "real" user on that machine that will
use the software. I think this is the scenario Jeffrey referred to.

Regards

Hello,

I knew this was going to draw some questions after I hit
"send"... First of all I want to make sure Jeffrey and no
one else thinks I was accusing him of intentionally doing
anything wrong - I was simply making sure that he thought
about it before doing it. I'm also far from an expert on
license agreements so maybe I'm interpreting it wrong.

It sounds to me that the intention of having people without
administrative rights accessing the software is that
multiple people will be accessing the same software. The
license agreement uses the term "Named User" which is either
an individual person or a specific single
terminal/computer/workstation. So unless everyone is
actually sitting in front of the same computer, it seems to
me that more licenses are needed.

If I misunderstood the intentions of the original posting, I
apologize. Nonetheless, it's never a bad idea to reconfirm
that you are in compliance with license agreements.

In the end of course, everyone should read it themselves and
discuss with MapInfo if needed, not me.

Hello Darren,

Could you expand on what Section 2 of the EULA does not
permit users with
less than Admin privileges? There are no doubt thousands of
corporate users
in the world who fall into this category as companies lock
down their
workstations to prevent the casual installation of software.
I don't think
there was anything in Jeffrey's post which suggested that he
was going to
install on to more machines than their organisation has
licences for.

I can't answer your question, but you should look up your
license agreement to make sure you are allowed to use it the
way you intend. The standard license says you can't use it
the way you state (even if it's technically possible) unless
you have purchased additional licenses - see section 2.
Your org. may have a custom agreement. You also have to
think about your data licensing which may or may not be the
same as the software itself.

No, I'm not a MI employee or stooge - I just think it's
important for everyone to follow their license agreements to
the best of their knowledge and if they can't then they
shouldn't agree to it and should do without the product.

Does anybody know whether there are any implications for
users of MapInfo
6.5 and/or MapBasic 6.5 and not having administrative rights
on the
computer? Would like to know for future users who will need
to be set up on
these apps.

Cheers,
