Have a look at demofuzz on directionsmag ftp site.
* define a set of 'origin' points
* define a set of 'target' points
* define a distance function graphically (let say a ramp from 0 to 50 km,
then zero; or a gate function from 0 to 50 km , depending on your needs)
* if you need orientation from 'origin' points, define an angular function,
like a ramp from 0 to 360 ?
* apply both functions simultaneously
* to find clusters, apply a gate distance function (mean clusters radius to
be defined) defining 'origin' and 'target' points as your whole set of
points (or only those 'gated' at 50 km in the previous step.

Not this straightforward, but fun and unusual tool to use ...
