To the list - Actually, I'm breaking one of my promises to myself =:) by joining this particular discussion (I'm just pushing the age of "blood-pressure angst"). But anyway - one more time...
- About the total "com"-ification of MapInfo: I've first heard about this piece of wish-ware from one the european MI sales-people about 4 years ago. That must be around ver. 5.0 of MapInfo. I think it's time to either deliver or kill the promise. I suspect, that MapInfo Corp. has put a stop for any development to the internal MapInfo engine, except for getting in step with the OGR derived datatypes in MapJ and MapX (multipoint and other new datatypes). As a MapInfo developer using MapBasic and Delphi, I find it sad that MapInfo can't deliver a comprehensive toolset for me to use. And no, I can't use MapX, because I first and foremost is developing extensions to _MapInfo_ or application that runs _inside_ MapInfo. At this point in time I would be satisfied if MI would permit me to transfer geographical _objects_ to and from Delphi or C - without going through the ordeal of "atom"-izing the objects in Mapbasic and transfer the simple coordinates as pairs of real type variables. So please MI, let me do something like this in MapBasic: i = some_dll_based_function (obj) and _document_ the "obj" record-type, so I can use it in Delphi or C. That is a very small effort, that goes a long way to ease my personal problems with MI development. At the present, my personal workaround is to write selections of objects to temporary tab-files and read them from my dll with MITAB, which is a open-source read/write library for MapInfo tab- and mif/mid-files. - About MapX : I've been using MapX to make some MapXtreme-based applications. I find it obfuscating and somewhat "alien" in comparison to the original MapInfo/Mapbasic framework. If MapX will be the basis for a new version af MI, I'll have a major headache to readjust to it. One the other hand - It must be a real bugger-all for MapInfo to have 3 different platforms to support: MI, MapX and MapJ. That is simply a (expensive in man-hours) duplication of effort. So go ahead MapInfo - MapX-imize all us developers... regards Bo Thomsen GeoConsult I/S Denamrk --------------------------------------------------------------------- List hosting provided by Directions Magazine | www.directionsmag.com | To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
