For all you out there with interest in MapX Mobile, you should get excited about Trimble's newest handhelds. Expected to be made available in June there are two devices, one sub-meter capable and second lower cost 2-5 meter device. Both color screened and with an "all day battery". Both are WAAS ready meaning you can get constant navigation within two to five meters for most of the US. Just add your maps and application and your on the road. They will not be low cost - my guess is $5000 for sub meter and $1500 for 2-5m. Also keep an eye on Garmin as well. They are a PalmOS integrator for about two years now. Anyway rather great news for all of us who have had to naivigate with PCs.... FYI MidNight Mapper aka neil >>>>>>>>>>>> Trimble (NASDAQ:TRMB) introduced today a breakthrough in Global Positioning System (GPS) and computing technology--the GeoExplorer CE series, the world's first Windows CE device with integrated GPS. The GeoExplorer CE series is rugged, portable and powerful handheld, setting a new standard for field mapping and mobile Geographic Information System (GIS) applications.
Mobile GIS meets the needs of field inspectors, maintenance teams, utility crews, emergency repair workers, and any field-worker who requires timely access to enterprise GIS data in the field. Mobile GIS integrates GPS technology, portable hardware, and GIS software. To facilitate information to and from the field, these innovative solutions leverage advances in wireless technology and the Internet. With mobile GIS, databases become directly accessible to field-based personnel whenever and wherever information is needed. "Rugged mobile GIS solutions are no longer on the 'wish-list' of the mobile worker and enterprise GIS manager who require access to data in the field," said Alan Townsend, vice president and general manager of Trimble's mapping and GIS business segment. "The GeoExplorer CE's unique combination of Windows CE operating system and GPS puts the power of high-accuracy mapping and mobile GIS in one easy to use handheld." http://www.trimble.com/news/052002a.htm --------------------------------------------------------------------- List hosting provided by Directions Magazine | www.directionsmag.com | To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
