Tony, TrueType Fonts are an easy and cheap alternative to the standard MapInfo symbols. I used the "Font Creator Program" from http://www.high-logic.com/. A single user license is $50, but you can try it first (shareware).
My way of getting the right font set was copying, renaming and changing an existing MapInfo TrueType Font to my use. The nice thing about TrueType Fonts as MI symbols is that one can rotate them. It is 'easy' to write a mapbasic script thats aligns a chosen TrueType symbol to a line or a region. If you want a mb script to do this let me know and I will mail it. Remember that you need to install the font to the font directory of windows. Locate in the Explore the Fonts directory, there you can access the menu: File > Install new font. I have contacted MapInfo Tech Support who indicate the Font Type Property must be set as "Symbol II" for MapInfo to recognize it as a Symbol. Previous posts to this questions have suggested "Fontographer" as software to use, however at $350.00 this seems a bit of an overkill for simple setting of a Font property. I have tried the Shareware font editor "Softy" out of the UK (http://home.iclweb.com/icl1/d.w.emmett/). This program allows for the setting of the Font Attribute "Character Set" as Symbol, however MapInfo will still not recognize the font. Is Fontographer the only solution for preparing TrueType Fonts for use as MapInfo Symbols or has anyone found an alternate solution? Thanks in advance.
