Suggest:
1. Use MapInfo v7 to draw a good floor plan and elevation of the carport
(mandatory step). Use Corel-Draw if you want to really impress the spouse
with a 3D view of your grand scheme. (It may take longer to draw than it
does to build - dont let this discourage you though.)
2. 2 x 3 " x 6 " galvanised, pre-drilled angle sections on each side of
the post (stringer) - the long side of the angle goes up the post.
Alternatively you can get stirrups to suit standard post sizes with a flat
plate base to bolt to the floor. The angle section approach gives a very
rigid connection though. If the post is not supporting roof or floor load, 1
angle per post might suffice.
3. 2 x 4" dynabolts (these are the brass, sleeved bolts with the nut on top
to tighten) each side of the 4x2 into the concrete floor (you'll need a good
hammer drill, masonry bit to suit the dynabolt size - see your local
hardware).
4. 2 x 3 " x 2/5" (10 mm metric-speak) cup-head or similar bolts through
the 2" dimension of the post. The long side of the angle should have 2 or 3
drill holes - bolt through 2 for a good connection.

Also, If weather-exposed, make sure you paint the base and holes with a good
rot-inhibitor.

Phil.
