Thanks to everyone who replied to my question. For the benefit of others I will summarise below.
Quite a few people sent me a MapBasic application called Bearing.MBX which is probably the easiest solution. To use it you simply draw a line on the screen and a dialog box pops up giving you the bearing and distance. The line seems to be displaced slightly after it is drawn, but the results it gives seem to be accurate. Trey Pattillo also sent me a nifty little program that runs on top of MI and gives you the bearing between two points or the bearing between a central point and the current mouse position. I can't post the applications directly to the list, but if anyone would like a copy then just let me know. I appreciate that this bearing may not be constant for large distances, but it only needs to work for short distances.
