Once you get to know them intimately, I think you will find that both
programs are really, really terrible.

You probably went with MapInfo because 4 or 5 years ago ESRI had no
application development environment to speak of. Digitizing, editing and
referencing scanned images (common flood applications), are much easier in
MapInfo. If you are a partner, you probably have lots of people using it.
Training is much easier with MapInfo. And as some have alluded to, the
institute of environmental research systems breeds a very strange culture
that seems to be a mix of academic allergies to applied science and the
pompousness of health food store employees- turns off realtors really
quickly.

I would definitely put that last line in your report.

I assume you aren't modeling flood inundation zones, or you would have went
with ESRI. FEMA had a huge contract with MapInfo and switched to ESRI for
the flood model because MapInfo could not perform some very simple GIS
operations.

Subject: MI-L MapInfo v. ArcInfo

People,
Ok, i know this question has been discussed before, but I suddenly have a
burning need for more answers. Our company chose to use MapInfo because of
some partnerships we had. Now, 4 or 5 years later, and after all the people
who made that decision have left the company, I am supposed to be able to
say why. So, that leads to my question (2 parts) below.

Why would I want to use MapInfo rather than ArcInfo? And the second part
of that questions is, why would I have chosen to use MapInfo over ArcInfo 4
or 5 years ago?

Much appreciation in advance for any answers to this (2 part) question.
