Now that europe can now enter into this discussion I think the whole
argument may well change direction.
However just to add my thoughts on the matter.
I agree alot of decsions to move to ESRI has been one of I used it at
college so why not here it is easier. Yes the training was sound and
everyone used it. My first experience of using a GIS was Mapinfo 4.5 I
enjoyed it, It is easy to use, a couple of clicks and it does what you want.
ESRI products confuse the hell out of me right mouse click and your lost.
I would like to stress that when I do flood modelling I use VM which
admittedly is an add-on but makes life easy.

Mapinfo is simple and it does exactly what it says on the tin. I even feel
the database management of the tables is a little better. But (and ther
always is a but) ESRI works with VisualBasic so little additions are easy to
create.

Who knows which is better. I think what we are looking at is a case of MS
Word and WordPerfect, they are exactly the same if not WordPerfect leads and
MSWord follows, but one is better marketed and used all over the place while
the other is relegated to specialist users. So who knows
