David, I never had any problem transfering MapInfo information to ArcView and vice versa. I simply use Universal Translator to convert shapefile to tab. Keep in mind that the shapefile can't contain more than one type of entity (line, point or poly) in the same layer and DO NOT support text elements. You are going into troubles if you need to convert an ArcView project into a MapInfo workspace or if you want to keep some sort of symbology. For "layer by layer" conversion there is no problem EXCEPT FOR TEXT.
