I have had problems for years going from ESRI to MapInfo and vice-versa. Problems include ArcView shapefiles supporting more nodes, MapInfo supporting self-intersecting polygons, strange and custom projections that ArcView does not store in the shapefile, raster registration files (tfw), 3D shapefiles, any ArcView raster or GRID data such as DEMs, TINs, networks, and other formats MapInfo doesn't support so won't read and translate, UNIX to DOS problems with e00 files, multiple polygons associated with one data row in MapInfo, and additional problems I forgot or was never able to track down. Seems like half the time I end up editing a mif file.
I think this topic needs it's own discussion group. -----Original Message----- From: Simon Roy [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, September 10, 2002 9:48 AM To: Mapinfo-L Subject: Re: MI-L MapInfo v. ArcInfo -compatibility? David, I never had any problem transfering MapInfo information to ArcView and vice versa. I simply use Universal Translator to convert shapefile to tab. Keep in mind that the shapefile can't contain more than one type of entity (line, point or poly) in the same layer and DO NOT support text elements. You are going into troubles if you need to convert an ArcView project into a MapInfo workspace or if you want to keep some sort of symbology. For "layer by layer" conversion there is no problem EXCEPT FOR TEXT.
