Dear Listers,

For those of you interested in web mapping in vector format, we have just
released SVGMapMaker 2.0 for MapInfo Professional 5.0 or later. SVGMapMaker
is a robust software solution to publish MapInfo documents to a fully
interactive web format called Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG).

>From MapInfo Professional to SVG...

SVGMapMaker leverages the graphics quality of SVG to create simple and
effective web mapping applications right from MapInfo Professional. Based on
XML and fully compatible with other web technologies, SVGMapMaker creates
intelligent on-line maps that have dynamic interactivity and quality. With
SVGMapMaker, there is no need to have special software on your web server.
SVGMapMaker outputs are entirely XML-based, which offers greater structural
control and sophistication than traditional web mapping. All documents
generated are fully scriptable and contain the layer structure, styles and
attributes of your data, as it is viewed in MapInfo.

SVGMapMaker was designed so that you can create your maps, layouts and
legend in MapInfo and publish them by the click of a mouse, without any web
or programming skills at all. The software allows users add interactivity
options to their exported map. You can add an info tool, info-tips,
hyperlinks, and color rollover functionality directly from your MapInfo Map
Window. The software also allows to apply several styles to your map layers
such as drop shadows, color gradients, textures and opacity settings. The
advanced graphic rendering and interactivity of SVG allows for sophisticated
outputs that share high quality and a very rich set of cartographic styles.

This new version of SVGMapMaker includes significant additions;

NEW INTERACTIVE OUTPUT

* Interface option in 100% SVG (Zoom buttons, overview map, panning arrows,
map title, layer control, zoom layering)
* Interface colors and fonts and new info tool in 100% SVG
* Hyperlinks from the info tool window (html and svg)
* Localised version (English, French)

NEW FEATURES

* Pie charts, bar chart and graduated symbol themes
* Cartographic and theme legends
* Extended character encodings using hexadecimal values
* Zoom layering
* Option to export invisible layers
* Line labeling with text on a path. This allows to create text that follows
the curves of the polyline for great text output !
* New dialog to set the output size of a map window

NEW STYLE SUPPORT

* Complex MapInfo line styles (Highways, railways, etc.)
* Underlined, halo and expanded text styles
* Text background (box) and rounded text boxes
* Number formatting in info tool
* Embedding of MapInfo font definitions inside the resulting svg documents
(users do not need these fonts on their system)
* Raster textures to fill closed objects
* Smoothed lines which are converted to svg path (quadratic Bezier)

Also, a free evaluation version is available for download with sample data
for the USA.

Scalable Vector Graphics for mapping...

Developed by the W3C, SVG is an XML grammar for vector graphics that offers
important advantages over web raster formats such as GIF and JPEG,
especially when it comes to display interactive maps and data. SVG documents
can be viewed in your web browser via a free SVG viewer from Adobe or on
wireless devices (Pocket PC's, etc). In addition, vector graphics software
such as Adobe Illustrator and Corel Draw have full support for importing SVG
files.
