Environmental GIS is a lot more fun using raster GIS, so Vertical Mapper http://wnp.marconi.com/VerticalMapper/index.shtml and the free Grid analyser from http://gridanalyser.dyndns.org/ is a must. If you want runoff and catchment areas try StreamBuilder www.avantra.com.au/products.htm. If you want to do a lot of 'Environmental GISing' you might be better of with Idrisi from http://www.clarklabs.org/ than MapInfo.
