Surfer is still improving and that is important (their old defaults was
highly problematic and the result was nice colour maps, but with a weak
professional foundation). I agree, that its is possibly to solve the
integration problems, but without VM we will still need other tools for
point aggregation (one of VM's strongholds and very important in data
preparetion) and for modeling.

If Mapinfo could add  a strong point aggregation function, then Surfer
could be a real alternative

There is also a free interpolation alternative - GSTAT - at
http://www.gstat.org/ - it requires a bit more knowledge about
geostatistics, has more advanced functions, is a bit slow and has problems
with very large datasets.
