G'day,

Thanks to all who responded, in particular Lyle Burgess who spent some time
pondering over the problem, and being on the right track. The response from
Martin Higham (a fellow Victorian) proved to be the answer to my problem:

You should be able to sort it out pretty easily.

Some background:
1. As you rightly assume, you need MapImagery to register and display .alg
images.
2. Since MapImagery is free, there is no reason why you shouldn't use it in
any MapInfo installation you want to.
3. So long as MapImagery has been installed, it does not need to be on the
menu bar in order to open a registered .alg file. You only need the
MapImagery menu commands to register the .alg file to begin with.
4. When you register any ER Mapper image (.ers, .alg, .ecw) with MapImagery,
it adds some "smarts" by pretending the pixel size is different to the
actual pixel size. This supersampling is set in the MapImagery options to
values between 1 and 64. Then MapInfo thinks the pixel size is somewhat
smaller than it really is, and MapImagery does the interpolation on the fly
to produce a smoothed appearance.
5. So, if you just take the tab file for the .alg image and change the file
name referenced, you'll get incorrect registration (smaller pixel size, but
no interpolation).
The solution:
Using the MapImagery menu, choose Open ECW Image. Then choose "Open Local
.ecw file" and "View Directly via ECW for MapInfo".
This will create a tab file that has no supersampling. It will still need
"ECW for MapInfo" to have been installed on the PC you want to display the
image on. This is an installation option for MI Pro 6.5
Best Regards,

Martin Higham
