Dear Listers,
This is a problem which has been occuring in one of our regional offices.
And I am somewhat confused by it. It's almost as if the network is loosing
the files between edits. The Mapinfo tables are being created in house.

It appears that a file has become corrupted, and the polygon extent (similar
in size to the superseded table) is no longer in the Map (the map still
exists, but does not appear to have anything in it). The file size of the
*.Map file (1kB) indicates that the object no longer exists in this file.
There are however objects (4No.) in the associated Browser Table.

This problem has occured several times on different files related (mostly)
to this project (typically layers with a small number of polygon objects in
it). In this particular case, initially, the polygon was visible in the Map
Window, but not selectable using the pointer (select & edit ticked in layer
control). It was possible to select the polygon using Query>Select all from
layer..., however once selected we were unable to perform any operations on
it (eg. Object>Set Target...). Upon closing down MapInfo, and re-starting
the computer (universal first solution to all computer problems!), the layer
was fine. After modifying the layer further, it 'corrupted' again, this
time removing the objects from the Map file.

The PC's MapInfo is runnig from are Pentium 4's with 250 / 500MB RAM,
however we have (at times) a particularly slow network connection up here,
making MapInfo quite sluggish.

We have a recent backup of the corupted file, so this is not a big problem
in itself, but the fact that this has occured several times now over the
past 4 months is of major concern. I would appreciate it if you could
have a look at the files and let me .know if you have any suggestions.
