There hasn't been much discussion on this list about the high resolution
data being made available from the Shuttle Radio Topography Mission (SRTM)
February 2000 where most of the surface of the planet was mapped using
advanced technology.

Three institutions are involved in the data processing: one US, one Italian,
one German.

The data have a very high resolution and have been processed for the whole
of the USA. Data will be made available in the public domain sometime during
this year on the home page of USGS.

I am presently working in Angola for the WHO. I have worked extensively with
MI to map things and events among them population movements.

Recently we had a tragic mine accident where an anti-tank mine killed 7
people. This event has triggered a thorough review of UN security procedures
where information management is a very weak element. This I have discussed
with them. I have proposed solutions (GIS)...

The SRTM data being high resolution may provide a very good mapping of the
landscape in which security operations have to take place and I have
proposed to the UN system that they apply for the release of data for Angola
to NASA/NIMA. The argument is that the information will be used for
humanitarian action.

Manifold can import srtm data directly and data have been made available in
an ESRI format.

What about MI?
