Hi Howard,

Maybe a market for a StreetPro data set to solve 16th century street addresses like
"XXIV Ye Olde Carriageway" ? ;-D

No seriously, there are a number of "geocodes" you can do in the Windows versions,
even though they're not always dubbed as such in
the GUI :
If you have X and Y, you use "Create Points". Remember to set the projection correctly.
If you have a seperate table with geography, you can join to it using "SQL select".
If you have StreetPro like data (vectors with left+right intervals), you use the
"Geocode" function.

And you can also use "Geocode" to make a simple match to any geographical table,
having the centroid (point) of the matched feature
be your "geocoded value". This is especially useful for matching against e.g. cities,
counties, postal districts etc.

And there are probably more intricate ways, and you might also be able to "fake" your
geocoding data into either of the above
formats.

It all depends on the format your current data's in, and what accuracy you want to
achieve. But coming from MI Dos you should at
least be able to import the data and apply the Windows version logic to them.

Subject: MI-L Mapinfo and genealogy

> When Mapinfo was in its infancy(dos) I developed an extensive database regarding a
>number of surnames. I was able to create point
files for location and geocode genealogical events against this point file. The
purpose was to study the diffusion of particular
surnames thru time. Before retiring from my academic career I purchased a windows copy
of MapInfo 5. I recently tried to duplicate
this project on Mapinfo5 and got totally stumped. It seems the only way I can geocode
my data base is if I have a street file or
database of postal codes. Unfortunately people in the 16th century didn't have either.
