Belated SUM for previous question on linking to Access - see below...

Many thanks to all those who offered suggestions - Dan Page, John Ievers,
Caroline Hilton, and especially Russell Lawley who gave me some MapBasic
help and examples.

The suggestions fall into two camps...

1. Commercial software - see CDR group's 'MI2Aform' mapplet at
www.cdrgroup.co.uk, and 'MapLinker' at
http://www.geobasemap.com/Products.htm.

2. Do it yourself -

a. MapBasic programme to export MapInfo information to a text file, use DDE
to launch Access database and a macro that will read in the table and open
the appropriate form.

b. MapBasic programme to launch Access then open DDE channel, and use
DDEExecute to run an OpenForm command in Access.

As this is a one off with no budget to buy, I used the second option (b)
which successfully opens the form I need from a click on the map.

Cheers
Karen

Subject: MS Access hotlink?

Dear listers, please can you help...

I have a polygon layer in MapInfo (v7) which defines regions. Another
department has an MS Access database which has an information record for
each of these regions. I am trying to open this database, open the Form,
and then display the appropriate record within the form for the polygon
clicked on. The emphasis is on displaying the form rather than bringing the
data into MI, as the form has a particular design that needs to be used.

I have looked at using the hotlink option, but can only get as far as
opening the database by adding in "filepath\filename.mdb" in the polygon
dataset hotlink field. Can I use this method and add information to specify
a form and a record number, if so what do I need to put in?

If not does anyone have any other suggestions of how to go about it? I have
MI 7, MapBasic 7, but no other programming software.

Many thanks for your help
Karen

PS WILL SUM
