I suppose we could ask a joke mailing list if it's okay to discuss GIS, or whatever else we desire, in their group.

I read or subscribe to a number of SPECIALIZED usenet newsgroups and mailing lists to learn about specific topics. To cut out the extraneous stuff, even though it is all part of life. Therefore, to have these groups filled with off topic stuff is getting us right back to one big, general, life group.

Does your local library segregate the books on the shelves or do you have to wade through a pile of all the books to get to the one you went there for?

And why are just jokes okay? Why not business, philosphy, medicine, sports, sex, travel, recreation, religion, hobbies, literature, etc.....? They all make someone feel good and provide relief from our workday.

I propose we add to this list:

sunday, or your religion's holy day, post religious topics
on monday - sports and hobbies
tuesday - philosophy and psychology
wednesday - business and money
thursday - travel and sightseeing
friday - jokes and humor
saturday - date night for some, so sexual and erotic matters. (Bill, you are going to have to allow posting of binaries, I'm afraid.)

guess there's no time for mapinfo afterall.....

Since the group's name is "mapinfo-l", not "GIS-info", I feel even a general GIS question is already on the edge of acceptable.

It's clear I agree with Ross.
