It is only when one needs something, not too often but so urgently, that one
does not find it at his finger tips and waste valuable time browsing for it.
After several forays on the subject and still having nothing concrete to
show, I decided to start a collection of transparent fonts; such fonts can
be useful in maps with large titles that would look too massively black.
Their transparency is relative, let us say that their bodies are dug out in
part to let see something of the underlying map, hence their many names
associated with the ideas of hollow, outline, inline, open etc.

<http://www.paris-pc-gis.com/MI_Enviro/mie_start.htm> under <Fonts
(special) | Transparent fonts> you will find a dozen fonts in free
distribution (as far as I could make it out) and 2 commercial ones for
reference.

I have identified almost as many more in free distribution. Before I
continue preparing them for display, I would appreciate knowing if that
operation is useful. I would accept any comments concerning the solution I
devised, the fonts themselves and will receive suggestions for other fonts
with pleasure. If anyone owning some commercial fonts is willing to prepare
images such as the one I have made, I will include them also. I believe that
seeing different fonts can give a better idea of what exist and help
deciding faster and more intelligently.
