Thanks Guys!

Blaine you got me looking in the right place...my problems stemmed from
dodgy file associations.

Thomas Brix Lyng:
If you have the app registered in MapInfo tools menu to autostart with
MapInfo and at the same time try to run the app (Ctrl+R) form MapBasic you
will get that error.

Blaine Castle:
When I worked in Tech Support, I seem remember a similar problem :

In the settings for the file types there is a setting for the MapBasic
application, that should be altered. As default the string is something like
this:
"C:\MAPINFO PRO\MI650\MAPINFOW.EXE" -noexec "%1"

If you change it to this, note the "%1" has disappeared: "C:\MAPINFO
PRO\MI650\MAPINFOW.EXE" -noexec

Try changing this and see if it has a beneficial effect.

Note that something like "C:\MAPINFO PRO\MI650\MAPINFOW.EXE" should be the
path to your MapInfo 6.5.

Cheers, Dave
