Thanks - that looks like a very useful routine but it's not exactly what I want in this case. I don't want to wait till the program finishes - actually I just want to give it time to get started properly, then I'm going to send it DDE messages.

But WaitForSingleObject is the same sort of API call as Sleep - it puts the calling thread into a wait state - so if it's OK to call that, I suppose it's OK to call Sleep
