I was going to bring up a similar thread on MapInfo performance on a Win2000 server network with WinXP Professional clients, so thanks for starting this Paul.
We do run MapX applications but our site currently has approx. 50 MI licenses connecting to the network where all our data resides. Since moving from WinNT4 to Win2000/XP there have been frequent times when in a MapInfo session, that performance is absolutely dreadful i.e. up to 20 to 30 secs to select move and unselect a label or text object! Currently each time performance is degraded we now supply our IT Division with the details in order for them to build some sort of picture to help fix this problem. The blame has certainly been initially placed on the network but I was curious to find out if any other MapInfo users have had similar perfomance degradations? Some of my thoughts that link this to MapInfo is that the on-the-fly projection could be one reason, due to our base topographic data is AMG/AGD66/84, our tenure data is MGA/GDA94 and we also have specific mine data on local mine grids with affine parameters. Another thought is MapInfo itself does not cache data too well when pulled from servers to locally installed and run MapInfo Pro. I must admit that if all the tables are moved to the local client and then accessed there is a significant improvement but this is not a viable solution. Does anyone suspect that MapInfo Pro itself manages server based projected data badly (god forbid!)? Some feedback to this thread would be greatly appreciated , especially if I can remove MapInfo off the list of culprits to this bad performance. BTW. All clients are Intel P4 based with min. 256 RAM, ATI Radeon 32Mb graphics and on board 100Mb network adaptors on a 1Gb backbone.
