Thank you for posting John's tip, Catherine! I did an experiment and created a PostScript file using this method, but instead of distilling it in Acrobat, I rasterized the file in Photoshop...and guess what? Transparent polygon fills actually came out looking decent! While not as clean as the "Save Window As" feature built in MapInfo, and rather lengthy in terms of process time, I was impressed with the result and can recommend others use the same method.

I have in the past posted my solution to several people and I believe it worked for them. The solution for me (and I find it ALWAYS works) is to print to a postscript file. It does not matter that your client does not have a postcript printer - I will explain: Just print "to file"from MapInfo, using a postscript printer and make sure you are creating a postscript file. Then start Acrobat Distiller and go to File >open. Find and select the ps file you have just created. select it and click on "open". This should then open a dialogue box "Acrobat Distiller - Specify pdf File Name". Select a name for your pdf file and click on "save" - Distiller should then produce you a pdf file. A word of warning! From my experience, all ps files are not created equal! I was warned about this by a chap I contacted at Melbourne Uni. who told me that in his opinion HP printer drivers are very poor in that regard. I can confirm that I also have had all sorts of problems in trying to create pdf files from ps files generated from HP printer drivers. After some trial and error I now only use the Tektronix Phaser 600 Extended printer - this has never failed me! In case you don't know you can install this from the Windows Desktop. In my Win98 it is: Start>Settings>Printers; then select "Add Printer" and by following the "Add Printer" wizard you should be able to find the Tektronix and install it. If you are using a later version of Windows which does not have the Tektronix, (the printer is no longer made), then you can still get the drivers from the Xerox website - I'm sorry I do not have the URL. I am using Win98 2nd Ed, Acrobat ver 4 Interesting that the post to you from Darrin Clement is the first explanation I have ever seen as to what might be the cause of these problems. What he says seems to fit with my experience. I have screeds of notes I made on solving the problems I had, background info, blah blah. If it might be any further help I can email it to you.
