Many thanks to all those people who replied to my request a week ago -
Austin Chong, Mark Neuhaus, Matthew Robinson, Laurence Seeff, Craig
Townsend, Caroline Hilton, Jason Adam and Russell Lawley. The most common
suggestion was to edit the Startup.wor in Notepad to add the statement:
Set Map XY Units "m" Distance Units "m" Area Units "sq m"
What I should have added is that we are running Easimaps (a run-time
version) here and that users often change their own startup workspaces from
within the program. They are not MapInfo gurus and we would not want them
editing their workspaces in Notepad OUTSIDE the program.
However Russell Lawley included some code with his reply that provided a
lead for our internal programmer. He has now written a small MBX which sets
the distance units to metres AND the GDA projection (another problem we
had!) on startup. The MBX can be set to Autoload (which DOES get written to
the PRF file) so the users don't even know about it and there is no problem
with them overwriting it when they make a change to their startup workspace.
Once again the MapInfo List came to the rescue by providing a solution to
two problems when we only asked about one!
