I believe I have resolved the issue... though not completely sure of the
process behind what was happening...

In looking at the memory and vm usage, it appears that the process of
combining objects is not only CPU dependent, but also taxes heavily the
memory and virtual memory... it must store a lot of information in the
virtual memory, and then once it starts to actually combine objects,
reads from VM and dumps it... this is what I can see happening at
least.  It took upwards of 600MB+ of VM to accomplish 2 rows of
combining street data... 

Thanks for the insights from Miguel, Paul and Sheila... learning a
little bit more about the tendencies of MI (even after 5 years of
this!!)... does it ever stop??!!
