Here's a fix - open the work space in MI and get the name of the field or variable not defined. Open the workspace in a text editor ( change the extension *.txt to *.WOR in open dialogue) and run search on that field name. DOnt forget about backing up files that you are working on. Replace the field name with COL1. Note the layer number so you can go back in layer control and get it back to where it was. These undefined variables / fields are typically in the Label options. After the workspace is where you want it, save it again.
