Dominey, Are you viewing the SHP file by itself, or do you have some other TAB reference files open as well? I had that problem once, and it was due to the MAP files being of different projections. When I opened the new file by itself, I could see the points.
It's also possible you need to "override" the point's image, and select a new one. Just a couple of thoughts.....
