Hello Listers, Thanks to Jason Adam, John Ievers, Jacques Paris, Gilbert Hache, Giuseppe Del Zotto, and 'GT4MI' for their responses.
Jason supplied an application to fill a region with symbols and also pointed me to Jacques Paris website (as did Jacques) where there is a thorough description of the process required to create custom fill styles (which involves altering DLLs). John and Gilbert both pointed out that version 7.5 of MI would contain more fill patterns and Gilbert suggested that version 8 will contain a pattern creation tool. Giuseppe and 'GT4MI' pointed me to the utility 'MapInfo Fill Patterns Editor', a demo version of which is available at www.mapinfo.fromru.com <www.mapinfo.fromru.com> . My conclusion is that this currently is a complex process and a third party utility should be investigated (which I haven't done yet).
