Thanks to all who replied to my request for help this morning.
The solution that worked best was to save the A4 layout window as 135cm
width and as a jpeg.
That was the maximum dpi it would save and then it looks fine in other
programs, its also a manageable file size. Using .tif the colour was
lost/changed when the map was printed in word.
I am using MI 6.5 so I didn't have the option of changing the dpi directly
as was also suggested.
