You are right in saying that the "save as default" check box gets un-checked after closing the requester with the ok button. But you are wrong in saying that MI will not keep the settings when it re-opens. The "save settings" applies only to those existing at the time of the save operation and will not register any change subsequent to that save. You will have to run the save operation again just before closing to make sure that MI will reopen in the exact state you left it.
