Woody, an ESRI coverage is ArcINFO's "native" format for geographic data, and consists of many "components". A shapefile is ArcView's native format for geographic data, and is dependent on three "core" components: a dbf for attributes, a shp for shape data and a shx for index. The translation of a shape vs a TAB would be: SHP is MAP, DBF is DAT, and SHX is ID. There can be other components to a shape, just like there can be other components to a TAB. I don't know about DLG's.
