Hi
It's a strong and interesting product. There is several production servers
and also several other testservers here in Denmark
It's fast, it's resonable easy to configure with simple solutions, it
support WMS and the new version even WFS.
There is a strong user community and it can run on both Windows and Unix
servers (a large consultiong house as DM Solutions is very active in the
development)
The present 3.6.x series is 8 bit and this can bee a problem with photo
backgrounds, but the next release is 24 bit.
The normal use is as a CGI solution and some is considering this a security
issue.
It's managed by an ASCII configuration file and there is a free Web
configuration tool (Maplab), but the managment get's a bit complicated with
many or changing layers
There is also a free java front-end (ROSA)
It can read a lot of formats (Shape, Orcale Locator/Spatial, SDE, PostGIS,
Mapinfo TAB etc.), but the engine is build around a Shape structure and you
can't mix point's, lines and regions in one layer.
There is also a limit of 50 layers in the binary distributions and
compliation on windows is complicated (I'm not a programmer, but project
manager and sponsor with a reasonable server knowledge)
I has several (one windows and one linux testservers) which is running
without any problems, but I'm also a bit reluctant to put them into
production, because I can't integrate them directly with my Spatialware and
Mapinfo TAB files with mixed content.
So I'm crossing my fingers for a good Mapinfo WMS/WFS solution
PS there is also the Degree alternative if it's WMS/WFS he is looking for

Hi all
I have been approached by a client with regards MapServer. I am aware of
MapServer as an OpenSource development environment but I'd like know where
the general MI / GIS community sees it sitting with regards to MI Discovery
and MapXtreme.
Good luck
