Hi John,

The first question is what software are you running on the GeoXT?

If you are running Trimble's TerraSync you first need to convert the
MapInfo files (Mid/Mif) into the Trimble Standard Storage Format (SSF)
file format. This can be done using GPS Pathfinder Office import
utility. You must have both Pathfinder Office and MapInfo on the same
computer (so Pathfinder Office can read the coordinate system). Then you
can transfer this to the GeoXT using the Data Transfer utility.
TerraSync can also use shape files as background so you could use the
Universal translator and export shape files. The background also accepts
raster files (.bmp, jpg and .sid files (I think?)) so you could also
create one of those from MapInfo.

As a side note if you are expecting to display the files in TerraSync
similar to what you see in MapInfo I think you will be disappointed. You
can modify the way it displays by using the data dictionary editor but
this takes a bit of time.

TerraSync is industrial strength "data collection" software. If you are
more concerned about data viewing as opposed to data collection I would
look at ArcPad. Unfortunately Mobile MapX does not support the HPC2000
platform (which the GeoCE series is) so we will have to wait until both
Trimble and MapInfo move to .NET...

Cheers

Subject: MI-L MapInfo map transfer to a Trimble GeoXT

Does anyone on the list have any knowledge of how to transfer a map
generated with MapInfo V6.5, to be used as a background map in the
Trimble GeoXT ?

What are the steps needed to accomplish this.?

Thanks,
