Hi Ben,

My guess would be that these symbols are so tightly integrated in the MapInfo code
that they can't be dumped altogether. Besides, a
vast amount of data relies on these symbols, so just removing it would break too many
things.

The "3.0 compatable font" is tied to the file MAPINFOW.FNT, and Pro will prompt for it
if it's just deleted (don't know about MapX).
However, it will run, which leads me to the idea that if the file exists but is empty,
the users are barred from choosing any
symbols from it. Maybe that's enough as an approximate work-around ?

The FNT file resides in several places, specific to the app using it:

Pro :
        C:\Program Files\MapInfo\Professional\
    or
        C:\Documents and Settings\<USER>\Application
Data\MapInfo\MapInfo\Professional\<VERSION>\

MapX :
        C:\Program Files\Common Files\MapInfo Shared\MapX Common\
    or
        C:\Program Files\MapInfo\MapX 5.0\

There is a tool distributed with Pro to edit these symbols. I think you can use it to
empty the FNT file.
